Lots of tourists on Pier 39 in San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf which is ranked as America’s most visited
attraction and is the most popular San Francisco attraction. It has some kind of magnetic effect on visitors to
San Francisco. It is the lifeblood of San Francisco Bay.
We came to tour Fisherman's Wharf on August 27, 2019. We took the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) from
Fremont on east side of San Francisco Bay and got off at the Embarcadero BART Station which is the first
station in San Francisco after the BART train went through the tunnel under the San Francisco Bay. Then with
a short walk, we got on the MuniStreetCars F-Line at Embarcadero stop near the water front. It took about 15
minute ride on the F-line vintage street car going north along The Embarcadero Street to arrive at Pier 39 in
Fisherman's Wharf. Photos and more information on F-Line MuniStreetCars along The Embarcadero Street
can be seen here and here.
Pier 39 near the eastern end of Fisherman's Wharf is a mecca for shopping, entertainment and eating. At Pier
39, there are shops, restaurants, video arcade, street performances, the Aquarium of the Bay, virtual 3D
rides, and views of California sea lions hauled out on docks on Pier 39's marina.
Detailed maps of Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco can be seen here.

Zoom in for a closer view of the campus of UC Berkeley as viewed from Fisherman's Wharf. Sather Tower,
also known as the Campanile, is one of UC Berkeley’s most beloved and well-known symbols. At 307 feet and
visible for miles, the Campanile is the third-tallest bell and clock-tower in the world, and an integral part of the
campus experience. Its current 61-bell carillon, built around a nucleus of 12 bells can be heard for many miles.

From time to time, some pelicans show up over Pier 39.
Sometimes the pelicans are flying very low just above the water (skim the water surface) on the Bay with the
background of the huge containers cargo ship on the bay. There several reasons for pelicans and some other
sea birds to skim the water surface: (1) Drag is reduced because energy-sapping wing-tip vortices are
inhibited near the surface of the water, and (2) As the air flows between the wings and the water surface, it is
compressed to a higher density and exerts a stronger upward force (lift) against the bird above. Hence,
substantial energy is saved while gliding near the water surface, gathering lift from the breaking waves..
I took a short movie clip of these pelicans flying low as shown on the YouTube website at:
I was planning to take a longer movie clip of pelicans in flight. But the view was cut short and blocked by the
submarine, Pampanito, on display on Pier 45.

Many tourists are enjoying fresh and delicious seafood on outdoor seating area on Pier 39. Tourists can also
enjoy some great fresh seafood at many stands along the wharf. Clam chowder, crab legs, steamed mussels,
just pulled out of the water...delicious!
The wharf area has a festive atmosphere that is rather contagious.
Some delicious seafood on display in Fisherman's Wharf. This is a seafood lovers paradise especially Crab
and Lobster fans. There are dozens of restaurants and seafood stands at all levels and plenty of budget
outlets on Taylor St and Jefferson St near the famous Fisherman's Wharf crab wheel sign serving up piles of
fresh crab meat and seafood cocktails on paper box plates for a few dollars.

The sea lions have colonized the marina right next to Pier 39. One of the big attractions at Fisherman's Wharf
is to watch many sea lions haul out and enjoying sun bathing on the docks here. Some are slithering in and out
of the water or just lounging around. Some of them are fighting. Their barking can be heard very far away. The
number of sea lions here hit an all-time record of 1,701 in November 2009.
I took a movie clip of these sea lions in action as shown in the following YouTube movie:

品嚐餐廳中每個小時都會現烤出爐的舊金山道地酸麵包 Sourdough Bread。特別推薦店
Many tourists love the delicious clam chowder in baked sourdough bread bowl with the top soaked in garlic
butter in Fisherman's Wharf both in San Francisco and in Monterey.
Sourdough bread is hugely popular in the Mediterranean and Middle East, as well as the San Francisco area
of the United States.
Many people consider sourdough bread to be tastier and healthier than conventional bread. Some even say
that sourdough bread is easier to digest, better for people with Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and less likely
to spike your blood sugar. Sourdough bread undergoes a fermentation process using naturally occurring
lactobacilli and yeast with beneficial enzymes, that may alter and breakdown the harmful molecules and
proteins such as gluten, carbohydrate-sugar, Phytic acid, etc. in the bread making them healthier. Lactic acid
bacteria are the same type of beneficial bacteria found in fermented foods (probiotic) such as yogurt, pickles,
kombucha, sauerkraut and kimchi. Its sour taste is due to the lactic acid produced by the lactobacilli.
More detailed explanation and studies indicating several important health benefits of sourdough bread over
regular bread can be seen here. Healthy and long lived people in Blue Zone often eat sourdough bread.
For example, Phytic acid is a substance in nuts, seeds and grains. Phytic acid are considered ‘anti-nutrients’
because they bind with minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc, making them unusable in the
body, creating mineral deficiencies in those who eat large quantities of nuts, seeds and grains. This is
especially true for vegetarians and vegans. It also binds with niacin, creating a B-vitamin deficiency called
pellagra, which is especially noticeable in developing countries. Probiotic lactobacilli contains the enzyme
phytase, which breaks down phytic acid, making the sourdough bread easier to digest, and rendering the
nutrients and minerals easier to be utilized in the body.
Studies show that the lactic acid in sourdough can actually release more antioxidants during fermentation.
Sourdough fermentation also tends to increase the folate levels in the bread as well. Sourdough also
possesses a variety of bioavailable nutrients. It is rich in B vitamins, B1, B6, B12, folate, thiamin, niacin,
riboflavin, vitamin E, selenium, iron, manganese, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and potassium, along
with its well balanced proteins and fatty acids.
In addition to tourists, many pigeons in Fisherman's Wharf also love the clam chowder in sourdough bread
bowl. I took a movie clip of several pigeons enjoying clam chowder in sourdough bread bowl as shown in the
following YouTube movie:
Many shops and places to grab a tasty bite. For seafood lovers, the best idea is to go to one of the street
stands that prepare crab cocktails — with classic cocktail sauce, crab sandwich, fish&chips and fresh fish to
suit all tastes, especially on Taylor St and Jefferson St near the iconic Fisherman's Wharf crab wheel sign.
Crab soup or clam chowder in San Francisco famous baked sourdough bread bowl soaked in garlic butter is a
must here in this area.
Clams, oysters, mussels and many different kinds of fish were brought in on the small fishing boats to supply
the residents with food. Part of the catch was boiled, grilled or steamed right here on the wharf for hungry
There are rows of sea food stands where you can buy fresh seafood - crabs, shrimps, fried fish, mussels,
and more. If you walk around with it, keep an eye out for the sea gulls which may want to take a bite too.
A catamaran, Adventure Cat, for San Francisco Bay Cruise. It takes tourists for a 90-minute cruise, going out
under the majestic Golden Gate Bridge and around the mysterious Alcatraz Island. It is great fun, a perfect
way for tourists to see the San Francisco Bay.

The Red and White Fleet is located on Pier 43½ on the intersection of Taylor Street and Embarcadero in the
heart of Historic Fisherman's Wharf for tourists to enjoy the San Francisco Bay cruise to see top attractions
such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Angel Island, the Bay Bridge and Sausalito from the water. It also
has twilight or sunset cruise on the bay to enjoy onboard music, drinks, a buffet, and two deck options for

Tourists can buy ticket to get inside for detailed look. It's fascinating to crawl through the submarine and see
the small quarters men lived in for weeks at a time. There's a good audio tour that takes you through it.

SS Jeremiah O Brian is also on display on Pier 45. She is a rare survivor of the 6,939-ship armada that
stormed Normandy on D-Day, 1944. It is a Liberty Ship (cargo ships) used to transport troops and supplies
during WWII. It's a huge ship and tourists can climb through all the levels.
This ship was also used in the filming of the movie Titanic. The scene with the water flooding the boiler room
was shot on this ship.

Another view of Pier 43 with its headhouse (the Arch) and railroad track in Fisherman's Wharf area. The
headhouse (the Arch) built in 1914-1915 is a decorated hoisting tower. It was where ferryboats docked, an
embarkation point for passengers, autos, cargo and rail cars. The headhouse with hoisting tower was used
for loading and unloading rail cars on and off big train ferries on the bay.
Before the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge were built, the Pier 43 was used as a landing slip for big ferry
boats and barges that plied the Bay and carried railroad freight cars from Marin and the North Bay to connect
with Belt Railroad in San Francisco.
The train ferry slip at Pier 43 allowed interchange of train cars with the Northwestern Pacific (running between
San Rafael and Eureka along North Coast of California), the Western Pacific (running between Oakland and
Salt Lake City in Utah), and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroads.
After the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge were built, the facilities on Pier 43 are not needed anymore.
