|A Possible Key Factor Contributing to
Long Life Expectancy of Asian Americans
According to the statistics from US Government on the US Life Expectancy ,
the life expectancy of Asian Americans is 86.67 which is longer than 78.86 of all Americans by 8 years. The
life expectancy of Asian Americans is, therefore, substantially longer than those of White Americans (79.12),
Hispanic Americans (82.89), African Americans (75.54) and Native Americans (75.06).
There are probably several important factors contributing to such significant differences in life expectancy
among several races in USA.
However, the following statistics from National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases
(NIDDK) in National Institute of Health (NIH)
indicate that obesity may be one of the key contributing factors. According to NIH data,
the percentages of adult population in USA with Obesity are 36.4% for White Americans, 48.4% for Black
Americans, 42.6 % for Hispanic Americans, 37.7 % for all Americans and only 12.6 % for Asian Americans.
It is well known that obesity can lead to several fatal diseases, such as heart attack, stroke, some cancers
(with 300% higher cancer risk because excess insulin in diabetes is cancer promoter.), diabetes (which can
lead to more complications such as blindness, kidney failure, brain failures (dementia) due to Type III diabetes
in the brain, nerve damages, or amputation of legs), higher blood pressure and its complications, etc. For
example, about 75% of people with diabetes die of heart attack. About 70% of hospital visits in America come
from complications of diabetes.
We often heard that Mediterranean Diet and Mediterranean Life Style are highly desirable to achieve good
health and long life expectancy.
But these statistics indicate that Asian American Diet and Asian American Life Style may also be highly
desirable to achieve good health and long life expectancy.
