1. Body Weight Measurements in The Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz
1.1. Experiment and Its Environment
On January 11, 2016, I visited the Mystery Spot at 465 Mystery Spot Road, Santa Cruz, CA 95065 USA
again. This is my third visit of this Mystery Spot. In this third visit, I did a simple experiment to measure my
body weight on the two close-by standing positions of the Shrink-and-Grow Mystery demonstration platform
near the entrance of this Mystery Spot area (i.e., at the edge of the Mystery Spot area.) The demonstration
platform for Shrink-and-Grow Mystery is in an open outdoor environment with many trees around and is
hundreds of feet far away from the tilted Mystery House which is near the center of the Mystery Spot area. In
other words, the demonstration of Shrink-and-Grow Mystery does not depend on the tilted Mystery House to
create illusion as shown on the following three YouTube videos:
Demonstration of Shrink-and-Grow mystery at Mystery Spot near Santa Cruz in California, USA at:
Demonstration of Shrink-and-Grow mystery at Cosmos Mystery Area in South Dakota, USA at:
Demonstration of Shrink-and-Grow mystery at Oregon Vortex in Oregon, USA at:
I brought a simple body weight scale to measure my body weight on the two standing positions of Shrink-and-
Grow mystery near the entrance of this Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz. It is an analog body weight scale with a
big dial to show the measured body weight. The brand of this scale is Health-O-Meter, Model HAB401DQ-99
G263NT. I used the same scale on the two standing positions to measure my body weight on those two
standing positions. I brought only one unit of body weight scale for this experiment.
As shown on the first YouTube video above for Santa Cruz, the demonstration platform is two parallel wood
planks which are reasonably smooth. The tour guide used the carpenter's level and its bubble to convince the
watching tourists that the demonstration platform is "level". Sometimes some tourists brought their own
carpenter's levels to check to make sure that the demonstration platform is level.
1.2. Measured Results and Its Implications
The distance between these two standing positions is only about 2 feet. The measured results indicate that my
body weights at these two standing positions differ by 2.5% (206 lb vs. 211 lb ). The results of my simple
experiment indicate that my body weight is not constant but varies with location in the Mystery Spot area.
The 2.5% difference in gravity may looks small and unimpressive to many people. But for people who pay
some attention to geophysics, especially the science of earth gravity, will realize that the 2.5% difference in
earth gravity on earth surface is extraordinary and is a big deal. For example, the summaries of the known
facts about earth gravity on earth surface in the following two references:
Wikipedia on Earth Gravity at:
"How precise is Earth’s gravity?" by Glen Thorncroft at:
indicate that the variation in earth gravity across the earth surface should vary by no more than 0.7%.
Usually, the earth gravity on earth surface is quite stable, normal, and varies by less than 0.7% across earth
surface. Furthermore, the normal earth gravity vector is pointing vertically down into the center of the earth (i.
e., has no horizontal component of gravity.) This is the basic principle used by the carpenter's level, plumb line
and by the survey instruments to obtain the basic local horizontal reference plan and the local vertical
reference line for various precision land survey measurements.
However, the extraordinary variation of 2.5% of gravity at such a short distance of 2 feet in the very special
location of Mystery Spot area indicates that the gravity in such special area is very abnormal, has a fine scale
structure that is very atypical of the earth gravity. In other words, the earth gravity from the huge volume of the
entire earth is usually very uniform over vary large area of many miles on earth surface.
The physical size of the source of such abnormal local gravity must be very small to be able to create a gravity
field that can change so much (2.5%) in 2 feet of distance.
Furthermore, the mass density of such compact source of such abnormal local gravity must be extremely high
to be able to produce such a strong local abnormal local gravity that is in the order of 2.5% earth gravity on
The strong fine structure of 2.5% variation in gravity at the short distance of 2 feet in Mystery Spot area is
very unusual. This is one of the reasons that the three land surveyors found that the gravity at the Mystery
Spot in Michigan is so abnormal that their land survey instrument could not function properly and that was how
they discovered that Mystery Spot at 150 Martin Lake Road, St. Ignace, Michigan.
The Illusion Theory for Mystery Spot asserts that the gravity is normal with no horizontal component in the
Mystery Spot and further asserts that all observed mysteries in the Mystery Spot area are due to illusion in
The measured difference of 2.5% is a proof that the local gravity in such Mystery Spot area is very abnormal.
In other words, if the gravity were normal in such Mystery Spot area as asserted by the Illusion Theory, my
body weight would be identical at those two standing positions. This is a simple experiment to prove that the
Illusion Theory is wrong. Therefore, this simple experiment provides one more Evidence against the Illusion
Theory. The nine sets of evidence, including this simple experiment in Santa Cruz, together in the following web
page I at:
Companion Web Page I: http://www.shltrip.com/Magnetic_Hill.html
form a strong proof that the Illusion Theory is wrong and that the observed mysteries in the Mystery Spot area
are NOT due to illusion in human perception, but are caused by the existence of significant abnormal local
gravity in such Mystery Spot area.
1.3 More Measured Body Weight Data in Santa Cruz
The Shrink-and-Grow demonstration platform in Santa Cruz is near the entrance (i.e., the edge, the perimeter)
of the Mystery Spot. From this demonstration platform, we have to walk on a steep uphill trail to go up to the
tilted Mystery House near the hill top at some distance away.
When we were near the Mystery House near the top of the hill, I also made body weight measurements at two
or three locations. The measured body weights were all the same of 211 lb near the Mystery House without
that 2.5% difference.
I also measured my body weight on the parking lot outside of the Mystery Spot area and my body weight is
also 211 lb on the parking lot.
My interpretation of such measured results is the following: The demonstration platform near the entrance of
Mystery Spot is substantially lower than that of Mystery House near the hill top. The strong abnormal gravity
comes from the high density dark matter in the center of the Mystery Spot area and near the Mystery House
which is substantially higher than the demonstration platform below. Therefore, the two standing positions on
the demonstration platform experience a vertical component of the abnormal gravity from the high density
nugget of dark matter. The strength of the vertical component depends on the distance. Therefore, the two
standing positions with different distances to the center of the Mystery Spot area experience different
strengths of vertical component of abnormal gravity resulting in that 2.5% difference in my body weight.
On the other hand, when we were near the Mystery House, we were at the same elevation level of the high
density dark matter near the Mystery House. Therefore, we experience very strong horizontal gravity pull from
the dark matter, but we do not experience significant abnormal vertical gravity because we were at the same
elevation level with the high density dark matter. Therefore, my body weight measured at those two or three
positions near the Mystery House are all 211 lb with no effect of the abnormal gravity.
If I had some simple device to measure the horizontal component of gravity, I would have measured very
strong abnormal horizontal gravity when we were near the Mystery House.
Therefore, when any other people who want to do the body weight measurements in other Mystery Spots, it is
important to check to see if there is substantial difference in elevation level between the demonstration
platform and the Mystery House. If there is substantial difference in elevation levels, then the two standing
positions on the demonstration platform may experience substantial vertical component of abnormal gravity
from the dark matter near the Mystery House so that the measurements can show substantial difference in
body weights at those two standing positions.
But if there is not much difference in elevation levels between the demonstration platform and the Mystery
House, then there may not be much difference in body weight at those two standing positions.
The parking lot of the Mystery House at Santa Cruz is too far away where the abnormal local gravity of the
dark matter near the Mystery House has diminished to negligible level to have no appreciable effect.
Therefore, my body weight measured at the parking is also 211 lb.
1. 4. More Measured Body Weight Data from Other Mystery Spots
In June 2016, I visited Oregon Vortex in southern Oregon for the second time and Confusion Hill in northern
California for the first time. I also brought my body weight scale and did the body weight measurements on the
Shrink-and-Grow Mystery platforms in these mystery spots. The measured body weight difference
between the two standing positions in these two mystery Spots is only about 1 % instead the 2.5% measured
in the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz.
I think there are two possible factors leading to the smaller 1% difference in body weight measured in these
two Mystery Spots as compared to 2.5% in Santa Cruz:
(1) The elevation difference between the Mystery House and the Shrink-and-Grow Mystery platform is much
smaller in these two Mystery Spots as compared to that in Santa Cruz. With greater difference in elevation
between Mystery House and Shrink-and-Grow platform in Santa Cruz, the strong abnormal gravity from the
high density dark matter has greater influence on the vertical component of gravity (i.e., body weight) at the
Shrink-and-Grow demonstration platform near the entrance of Santa Cruz Mystery Spot area.
(2) Not All Mystery Spots Are Equal: The compact nugget of high density dark matter in Santa Cruz may be
much heavier than those in Oregon Vortex and in Confusion Hill. In other words, the abnormal gravity in Santa
Cruz may be much stronger than those in Oregon Vortex and in Confusion Hill. The stronger abnormal gravity
at Santa Cruz relative to the normal earth gravity results in greater percentage difference in body weight at
those two standing positions on the demonstration platform.
Similarly, among hundreds of Gravity Hills all over the world, we have also found that Not All Gravity Hills Are
Equal. Some Gravity Hills, such as the Magnetic Hill near Moncton in eastern Canada, are very strong such
that the Gravity Hill mystery is very strong and impressive. But some other Gravity Hills are not so strong. And
some other Gravity Hill are weak such that the Gravity Hill mystery is weak and ambiguous.
2. More Insight on Horizontal Component of Gravity in Mystery Spots:
The experience gained from this third visit (plus two previous visits of this Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz, two
visits of Oregon Vortex in southern Oregon, a visit of the Mystery Hill in North Carolina and a visit of Confusion
Hill in northern California) enhanced my insight on the horizontal component of the abnormal local gravity as an
important contributor to many mysteries observed in several Mystery Spots and in hundreds of Gravity Hills all
over the world. Therefore, I have added Section 2.8 on Eighth Evidence against Illusion Theory in the
Companion Web Page I listed above and made substantial update in Section 8 on scientific explanation for the
Shrink-and-Grow Mystery in the following Companion Web Page II:
Companion Web Page II: http://www.shltrip.com/Oregon-Vortex.html
Such insight help me to realize the important role of dark matter in the mystery of Free Standing Broom
demonstrated in several Mystery Spots as explained in my Companion Web Page III at:
Companion Web Page III: http://www.shltrip.com/Free_Standing_Broom.html
In essence, the Illusion Theory and the believers of the Illusion Theory assume that the gravity is normal with
no horizontal component in the known Mystery Spots and in hundreds of Gravity Hills all over the world. All the
observed mysteries in the Mystery Spot areas and on the Gravity Hills are believed (erroneously) to be due to
the illusion in human perception.
On the other hand, my simple body weight measurements in this third visit plus several other experiments by
other researchers indicate that the local gravity is abnormal with significant horizontal component in these
Mystery Spot areas. The nine sets of evidences against the Illusion Theory are described in my Companion
Web Page I listed above. These nine sets of evidences indicate that the Illusion Theory is wrong and that
these observed mysteries are due to the existence of significant abnormal local gravity, especially with
significant horizontal component, in these special locations of Mystery Spots and Gravity Hills.
2.1. Mis-Use of Bubble Based Carpenter's Level in Mystery Spots and on Gravity Hills
With 23-year research on Mystery Spots and Gravity Hills, we know that the local gravity at these special
locations of Mystery Spots or Gravity Hills is very abnormal with a significant horizontal component. The bubble
in the carpenter's level is affected by the significant horizontal component of such abnormal local gravity such
that carpenter's level cannot really tell if the ground in such Mystery Spot area or Gravity Hill is level or not.
Therefore, it is misleading to use bubble based carpenter's level in a Mystery Spot area to check if the ground
is level or on a Gravity Hill to determine which end of a Gravity Hill is higher.
Appendix: Problem of Digital Body Weight Scale and Some digital Devices in Mystery Spot
In my second visit of the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz in 2012, my younger son, living in Mountain View,
California, responded to my request, brought a digital body weight scale from his apartment to Mystery Spot
intended for our simple experiment to measure body weight on those two standing positions. However, that
digital body weight scale did not work in the Mystery Spot. It is very strange in that the digital body wight scale
works properly in my son's apartment in Mountain View both before and after our trip to Mystery Spot. We still
do not know why that digital body weight scale did not work in the Mystery Spot.
I had another experience of very strange behavior of my portable GPS navigator when it was near the area of
a Mystery Spot, known as Cosmos Mystery Area, in South Dakota. It is described in more details in Section 8
on my web page at:
