Lake Mead Cruise and Bighorn Sheep Near Hoover Dam in Nevada
|
I went to Las Vegas area in Nevada to attend my classmate reunion in the second week of November 2006. In
our classmate reunion program, on Tuesday morning, November 7, 2006, we went on Lake Mead Cruise near
Hoover Dam which is about 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas. There are colorful waterfowl near Lake Mead
Cruise Landing as shown in these two pictures.

There are many waterfowl and big fish near Lake Mead Cruise Landing. These waterfowl are about the size of
typical ducks. Some of these fish are bigger than the ducks.
Some big fish are carps, but some others have long stripes and are not carps

During the cruise, we saw several desert bighorn sheep, Nevada's state animal, on the lake shore mountain
slopes. We saw the head and the big horn of a male desert bighorn sheep on the lake shore mountain as
shown in this picture. The body of this sheep is behind the rock

On Monday, November 6, 2006, I went to Hemenway Park in Boulder City to get a closer view of the desert
bighorn sheep, Nevada's state animal. This park is only a few miles from Hoover Dam and from Lake Mead. It
has nice green grass in this desert area, is near the mountain and attracts many wild desert bighorn sheep to
come down from the mountain to this park to eat the grass. The male has big horns and the female has small
horns. Local people told me that they have seen as many as 60 bighorn sheep grazing the grass in this park.

Hemenway Park has a nice view of Lake Mead. Visitors can park their cars at the parking lot and sit leisurely
on the benches of picnic tables to watch bighorn sheep grazing on the lawn in the park as shown in this picture
and the next picture.

Four years later, I had a chance to come to visit Hemenway Park for the second time on the afternoon of June
8, 2010.
Wow! There were at least 50 desert bighorn sheep grazing on the lawn in this park as shown in this and the
following photos.
Some of the bighorn sheep were resting in a shaded area. A local people told us that he saw about 200
bighorn sheep in this park last year (2009).
